Senior Moments has enjoyed a successful 2011 and is looking forward to a momentous 2012. Senior Moments achievements start with its amazing volunteers who tirelessly work on behalf on our dear elders. I must take a moment to acknowledge them first. Ms. Liz Koppenhaver, even in the face of experiencing a stroke last year, still faithfully attends Senior Moments meetings as our Senior Advocate. We are truly grateful for her remarkable recovery! Shamila Chand has been a fixture with Senior Moments for most of our 6 years. She has always been a champion for Senior Moments and her commitment is appreciated.
Pastor Betty Clark is in a word – phenomenal! Her words of advice and encouragement not only inspire her listeners, but she has a gift of lifting the spirits of elders like no one else. As she approaches you with her million dollar smile you know you will be in for a ear tantalizing treat with her words of wisdom. We thank Pastor Betty Clark, our Spiritual Care Coordinator, for her amazing work with elders. Her organization, Chaplains Without Walls, is providing life enhancing support to many senior care communities. A new and welcomed addition to our team is Denise Gozdanovich who has agreed to help us with our computer based needs. We are pretty fortunate that Denise selected Senior Moments as an organization she is willing to use her time and talent to assist.
Senior Moments hit some new milestones last year that I am looking forward to sharing them with you at our next meeting. However, there is one highlight I must share. This past summer my stay in Washington D.C. resulted in an appointment on a collaborative legislative committee to introduce The Health Equity and Accountability Act of 2011 (H.R. 2954). This bill provides the tools necessary to address the health disparities experienced by minority and underserved communities. The bill was introduced to President Obama by Congresswoman Barbara Lee in Sept. 2011. It is very important for seniors to be included in health equity discussions in the United States and Senior Moments was there to do just that!
I am happy to announce that Senior Moments will have its first fundraising dinner in August 2012! We are so excited to enter our 7th year by creating an avenue to raise funds to support our lifesaving work. While we have been very effective in helping homebound seniors, we much make a concerted effort to locate more isolated seniors in need. As we cast a wider net to find more elders in need, financial support will be needed to do this, and all generous contributions for our August 2012 dinner will be appreciated. Stay tuned for more information on how you can support this effort.
Please keep checking our website and share it with others as we will post more information that will be important aids to our senior community.
Mark your calendar for the 2nd Wednesday of each month, with the exception of July, to attend our meetings at 9:00AM. You will find the location of our meetings on our website.
Have a fabulous new year and please strive to create a moment for a senior that they will never forget.
